10 July is International Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day, and there is also a Teddy Bears’ Picnic Week celebrated around this occasion.

Across the UK, a number of organisations are already planning Teddy Bear Picnic events to raise awareness of the needs of different groups of children. We are keen to ensure that young carers are included in these celebrations and recognised for the important role they play.

Several young carer support organisations are now planning Teddy Bear Picnic events for 2027 and are hoping many others will join in the fun. Through these activities, we want to highlight the need for greater recognition, understanding, and support for our youngest young carers.

​

We also hope to encourage early years services to identify children who are young carers, or who may be at risk of becoming young carers. Early identification can help strengthen communication with families and ensure that schools are aware of a child’s caring responsibilities when they transition into education settings.

Early years providers should be aware that there is no minimum age for young carer rights. Where a caring situation is having a negative impact on a young child, the local authority has a duty to undertake appropriate assessments and consider what support may be needed.
